John Gates

Based in Dallas, John serves as Executive Chairman of Americas Leasing Advisory at JLL. In this role, he focuses on building relationships with occupier clients, targeted broker recruitment, oversight of Mexico operations and providing strategic advisory across the platform.

John previously served as CEO of Americas Leasing Advisory, leading JLL’s brokerage business in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. During his tenure as CEO, Gates strengthened JLL's presence across the Americas, expanded leasing capabilities in key markets and established the firm's industrial and logistics business. He also launched JLL University, one of the firm's most regarded training programs and advanced the Champions of Excellence tradition celebrating employees’ outstanding career contributions to the firm and communities.

John came to JLL during the acquisition of the Staubach Company in 2008 and has served in numerous leadership roles across the firm. He became CEO of Leasing Advisory for the U.S. in 2014, with his responsibilities expanding to include Canada in 2019 and Latin America in 2020.

John’s career in commercial real estate spans almost three decades. After earning an MBA in finance from the University of Texas at Austin, he joined the Staubach Company in 1990. There, he became a top Dallas broker, before rising to several leadership positions, including President and Chief Operating Officer.

John is deeply involved in Dallas civic life. In 2009, the Mayor of Dallas appointed him to the Dallas Housing Authority’s board, where he served until July 2014. He currently serves on the Dallas Citizens Council where he is chair elect and has served on the boards of numerous charitable organizations.

His wife of more than 41 years, Jennifer Staubach Gates, recently served her fourth term as Dallas City Council’s District 13 representative. They have two daughters, four grandsons, and one granddaughter.

In his spare time, John enjoys being with his family, traveling, fishing, and hunting. In addition to his many civic commitments, he is a member of the Executive Council for the Real Estate Finance and Investment Center at the University of Texas at Austin and is very active in the Dallas Catholic community.
